Tips for Successful Farming

Starting a farm is easy, but it can be complicated because it encompasses so much. Intending farmers must consider their passion, business planning, finding land, securing capital, marketing, experience or knowledge, securing equipment, developing and securing infrastructure and having vision. These points below are factors to consider before venturing into farming business:
1.      Passion:
Do you have passion for anything? What is this passion? Is it connected to the farming business which you intend to start?  A successful business is often determined by the passion the owner has for that business venture. This is the reason why the business ventures of owners who are interested in them are doing well. For one to be a successful farmer, the individual must have passion for farming. Maybe he or she is interested in walking in the farm or inhaling the fresh leaves and the wet soil, this passion for the farm will prompt the person to success.
2.      Business Planning:
Intending farmers need to have a well designed business plan that take into consideration individual infrastructure, financial need, production capacity, the knowledge of the business and the business location. An intending farmer should plan his business well and make sure there are no hitches as he goes into the business.
3.      Finding Land:
Finding a good area and land for farming can be difficult. For someone who has knowledge of geography and agriculture, the individual will have the knowledge of the factors that affect the business of farming. There are things to consider when looking for a land for farming: good soil, pests, topography, weather and climate, cheap labor, security, water, nearness to market, good roads and so on. One should be careful with his or her choice in order not to destroy the business forever.
4.      Securing Capital:
Capital is one of the major elements of an enterprise. Capital is the wealth needed for the execution of the business idea. Sometimes, one might have business idea, but there is no capital to execute the business idea, so it remains an idea. For an intending farmer, getting capital for the business shouldn’t be that difficult. In Africa, there are many governmental and non-governmental organizations that help farmers with capital and they even give interest-free loans. In Nigeria for instance, there is Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative and Rural Development Bank Loan.
5.      Experience or Knowledge:
Every man is born an innate farmer, however, it is necessary that one gets himself or herself acquitted with the rigors and process of farming in order to be well-grounded in the business of farming. No knowledge is a waste. One should visit a good farm and learn the processes even if it is a month, it will be helpful.
6.      Marketing:
Before a farming business starts, it is important that the intending farmer considers the market and the marketing strategy that will sale the products from the farm. The one of aims of a business enterprise is to maximize profit; a business without profit is at loss. So an intending farmer should consider the market and how marketable the goods are in the chosen area.
7.      Have A Vision:
Where do you want the business to be in five years time? How many clients will you have in the next five years? How many employees will be under you? Have goals and objectives as you venture into this farm business. Keep this vision in mind and work toward its realization.
8.      Start Small
Since farming is somehow like a risky business, one should invest big at onset or invest all that one has. A beginner should start small and then build and nurture the business, and he or she also gets experience, therefore, the business improves and grows.

9.      An intending farmer should be a risk bearer to be able to run an effective farm. A risk bearer bears the risk alone no matter what might be the loss, and this risk bearer creates wealth and employment for people.
