Culture: The Problem of Man
Man according to what
humans believe is the only rational animal on earth. When a man is born, the
man is born into a world of troubles and challenges which the man has to
struggle to overcome to become a better individual. For a man to live a
comfortable life and control all the aspects of life, the man must have to overcome
the challenges and the troubles. At the onset of a man’s life, the parents show
him the way and they struggle to offer him the best in order to make him
overcome the challenges later in life.
Man grows and becomes
overwhelmed by the web of troubles and doom which often taunts him into
desperation and loss of determination and hope. He is forced to get married,
take care of the children, find a good job, have enough money to cater for the
family, take care of his aged parents and so many other duties which often
weighs the man down. Some men who are incapable of facing the challenges resort
to crime, and this is where culture wades in. Culture also comes in to answer
man’s questions which are disturbing; these questions deal with religion and
history most of the time.
According to the
Longman Dictionary, it defines culture as the beliefs, way of life, art and
customs shared and accepted by people in a particular society. Culture has to
deal with religion, aesthetics, administration, social order and some other
features. Most importantly, it acts as an invisible police through customs and
norms. These customs and norms regulate society and withhold evil doers from
carrying out their evil act in society.
There is no clear
indication or record of how ancient men lived and associated with themselves,
but according to scientific theories, man’s life was short, brutish and nasty.
The life span was around twenty. Possibly, when men found out that they could
not continue that way, they resorted to culture as an answer and a regulator.
They also had so many questions which they couldn’t find any answer for,
questions about origin, the supernatural, life problem and death. Culture had
the answer.
Man and society has a
truckload of problems; the surest way of surmounting these problems is by
establishing culture. Culture solves human problem through various means, and
this culture touches all aspect of human lives. Individuals who ignore their
culture or do not value their culture are doomed. This is the reason why people
uphold their culture and fight to keep it, because culture is so important and
it helps solve human problems.
