The Increased Road Accidents in Nigeria: The Causes

There has been record of more than ten fatal accidents this year, sometimes, it involves top politicians and activists. People ask: what’s the cause of this? While some Nigerians believe its how nature has destined it to be, others put the blame on the poor condition of the Nigerian roads, others put the blame on the poorly built vehicles.

There are other causes like faulty parts of vehicles and over speeding by the victims of these accidents. God shouldn’t be linked to the havoc that is being wrought by humans here in Nigeria. The roads are terrible, and everyone seems to be in haste here in Nigeria. Nigerians drive on these bad roads at a high speed putting their lives and that of others in danger. And sometimes, the drivers of these vehicles do not obey traffic rules or road signs. We are putting the blame on the victims alone, but if Nigerians could be more careful and patient, many lives would not be lost to road accident.

The Nigerian government should endeavor to repair and widen the roads. The situation of most of these roads is terrible. These roads are death traps. Nigerians know this well—the death trap roads, but they still choose to over speed on these roads, which of course, is bad, and it leads to loss of lives and properties.

The solution to this problem shouldn’t be prayer like most Nigerians believe. The Federal Road Safety Commission should do well to educate Nigerians and put more stringent measure to curb over speeding on Nigerian’s roads. Nigerians should do well and save their lives and that of others by driving carefully. And in case of tire blowout, one shouldn’t apply the break instantly to avoid throwing the car off-balance.
