Religion and Politics: The Need for Demarcation

Religion and Politics have been like milk and tea since the earliest time of human civilizations. This has been so because the divine being has to have a hand in the affairs of man, and the divine being has to do so by being involved in human politics, aiding the election of the right candidate for the people. Evidence of this can be found in the Holy Bible.
However, things are no longer the same. Religion shouldn’t meddle with politics. They are supposed to go different ways. This doesn’t remove the fact that there might be politics in religion, but there shouldn’t be a romance between religion and human politics outside religion.
Father Mbaka is a catholic priest serving in the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. The media call him the fiery priest. Wonderful name! Well, people, especially his loyal worshippers respect him and his prophecies a lot. He has made a lot of prophecies, some have failed, and some have come to reality. The recent controversial prophecy he made during the election made him have more friends and more enemies. It is in people’s mind that he is one of the few men of God who prophesied that President Jonathan would lose, and he lost.
The question now is why is Father Mbaka romancing the people in power? Aside President Buhari, he also romances the Enugu State governor.  A priest can perform his civic duty as a citizen of a country by voting, but a priest must never get into politics or have some form of relationship with politicians.
In the earlier human civilizations, politics and religion could not really be separated, but because of the problems it caused, at this age, religions have taken steps to make sure there is no or little relation with politics. Politics is a dirty and corrupt game, and so, it can corrupt the minds of the ones in religion who serve as the link between humans and God. The respect the followers have for the men of God might diminish. Politics might make the man of God loose focus in his functions. The man of God might become greedy, because of the kind of money in the politics of some countries. Besides, the work of a priest is to call souls to God and preach to people, so, a priest shouldn’t go around being a semi-politician.
There are many other reasons why there should be a wide demarcation between religion and politics, but they cannot be listed here. The vital point is that religion and politics, two human institutions should not romance each other like husband and wife; although they moved and worked together in earlier civilization, it shouldn’t be so now.
