a drug. In Nigeria, the people of southeastern Nigeria use it mostly as a
vegetable while the people of southwestern use it as a drug. Though, this leaf
is bitter, it serves a large number of purposes and man benefits largely from
this leaf.
This bitter leaf grows everywhere in Nigeria, most
especially in near the family homes. The botanical name is vernonia amydalina. Bitter leaf is good for the body; it helps tone
the vital organs of the body: the liver and the kidney. Bitter leaf contains Vernodalin, Venomygalin and Saponin. Bitter
leaf should always been taken fresh, boiling or cooking reduces the potency of
bitter leaf.
Bitter leaf is curative, and the following listed
below are uses of bitter leaf:
1. Stomach-ache:
Chew the tender stem of the plant like chewing stick and swallow bitterness.
This is a well-known remedy for stomachache.
2. Skin Infection:
Skin infections as such as eczema, itching, ring worm, rashes can be cured with
bitter leaf. Simply apply it to the affected part.
3. Diabetes:
Bitter leaf reduces the sugar-level in the body and helps repair the pancreas.
Squeeze ten handfuls of the fresh leaves in ten liters of water and take two
glasses thrice daily for one month, this amount to six glasses daily.
4. Body Weakness:
Find a bitter leaf plant. Squeeze the leaves in water and take a glass thrice
daily. Soon you will experience a new lease of energy.
5. Insomnia:
Take two glasses of bitter leaf every night. You will experience calm and well
being. You may add little honey if you wish.
